Chapter 2 : The Ingredients

Since our dogs can't read, it's our responsibility to know what we feed our dogs.

 

AAFCO uses a system where weight determines the placing of the ingredients at the back of the label.

Here are some basic tricks to help.

TIP 1: LOOK AT THE FIRST FIVE INGREDIENTS

 

The first five ingredients are the ones that constitute most of the product. In almost all websites I've looked, this is the most usual method advised. 

TIP 1: LOOK FOR THE FIRST NAMED SOURCE OF FAT

 

According to Sabine Contreras, an animal nutritionist, anything listed before the first source of fat make up the main portion of the food

Commercial dog food means adding certain ingredients/chemicals to clean, preserve, or enhance the product.
